CoachUp founder and CEO Jordan Fliegel says the startup will aim to solve a number of issues for sports facilities through a forthcoming service on its site.
Boston's CoachUp, a startup offering an online marketplace for matching athletes with private coaches, is putting together plans to expand into serving sports facilities, CoachUp founder and CEO Jordan Fliegel said in an interview.
Fliegel described the planned offering as an "OpenTable for facilities" ? aiming to do for sports facilities what OpenTable has done for restaurants in terms of boosting reservations.
Many facilities and gyms face a similar issue: The times when "the lights are on, and no one's there," Fliegel said.
In addition, sports facilities often cannot accept credit cards and don't have much of a budget for marketing, he said.
CoachUp aims to help solve all those issues, Fliegel said ? by providing new leads to facilities, allowing users to pay by credit card and providing a marketing element akin to what OpenTable does for restaurants.
Fliegel didn't have an estimate on when the offering for facilities could launch, but said CoachUp is currently talking to facilities to ensure the company builds the right solution.
The facilities offering, he said, is "the next major thing" for CoachUp ? which has grown to serve more than 8,000 coaches and more than 26,000 athletes since launching in May 2012.
In November, CoachUp received a $2.2 million Series A round led by General Catalyst Partners and Breakaway Innovation Group. The startup took part in the MassChallenge and TechStars Boston startup accelerators last year, and has 20 employees.
