Bob Kays picked as Marlborough parade marshal

Longtime Marlborough resident and Prospector East Saloon owner Bob Kays has been selected as the grand marshal for this year's Labor Day parade.

Mayor Arthur Vigeant and parade director Ed Thurber announced their choice of Kays during a press conference?Monday?afternoon.?

The theme for this year's Labor Day parade, scheduled for?Sept. 2, is the "Spirit of Marlborough," a spirit fully embodied by Kays, city officials said.?

?Bob?s endless good deeds and his limitless compassion has earned him the appreciation of our citizens for many years now," Vigeant said in a statement. "I am happy to pay tribute to the spirit of helping others that Bob embodies by honoring him as our Grand Marshal this Labor Day."

Kays is the chairman of the Marlborough Recreation Commission, a longtime board member at the South Middlesex Opportunity Council and a board member at the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation. For many years he was also the owner the Eastern Football League Marlborough Shamrocks.?

Kays has also helped organize several fundraisers and events like the Relay for Life, the Mayor's Charity Ball, Chowder Fest and and the Evening of Giving.?

He's also no stranger to accolades. He's received the Hudson/Marlborough Good Scout Award, the Marlborough Pride Award, the Humanitarian of the Year Award, the Marlborough Spirit Award and a Marlborough Lifetime Community Service Award. He was also honored in 2011 by Yankee Magazine as a nominee for "An Angel Among Us."
