South Korea?s iriver is adding to the global lineup of low-priced Android phones with the launch of the ULALA model.
The maker of digital music players is selling its smartphone on the domestic market for less than $150, mainly targeting businessmen who want a second phone and cost-conscious consumers such as visiting students. A spokesman said the company is considering launching the phone overseas after ?good response? in the Korean market.
The ULALA has a 3.5-inch screen and a slot for a second SIM card. It also supports analog radio transmission, allowing users to listen to radio programs without having to connect to the internet.
But its biggest selling point is undoubtedly its price. The popular line of Galaxy smartphones produced by Samsung Electronics , the world?s largest maker of smartphones, usually cost around 700,000 won ($660) or more. Technology research firm Gartner estimates Samsung smartphones accounted for about 66% of the local market in the January to September period, followed by those from LG Electronics at 16%.
Shipments for low-end smartphones world-wide are likely to rise to 559 million in 2016, up from just 206 million in 2012, IHS iSuppli said in a research note. Emerging regions where low-end smartphones have the most appeal are expected to generate the fastest growth among all regions for mobile handsets in the coming years, with China likely leading growth for all cellphone types.
?The low-end spectrum represents the fastest-expanding segment of the global smartphone market, with shipments more than doubling from 2012 to 2016,? IHS iSuppli said.
