T-Mobile iPhone 5: battery life bad on T-Mobile?

Ever since I've been testing T-Mobile on my iPhone 5 (it's been a few months now), I noticed that my battery life has been less than satisfactory. I've gone through 3 different iPhone 5s for various reasons, too. If I switch back to my AT&T SIM, battery life immediately seems to improve. Is this expected? Is T-Mobile's network naturally weird to where it uses more battery? Is the iPhone 5's baseband just not fully optimized for T-Mobile yet? ...
