Agriculture sustainable way of making a living, says GBM - Daily Mail

SCOTT-OPENS-SHOWBy CHRISTINE CHISHA and KAPALA CHISUNKA
MINISTER of Defence Geoffrey Mwamba has urged Zambians to venture into agriculture as it is a sustainable way of making a living.
And Vice-President?s wife Charlotte Scott, has described this year?s 87th edition of the Agriculture and Commercial Show as an eye-opener for farmers to diversify crops and adapt to climate change.
Mr Mwamba, who pledged Government?s support towards the sector, said agriculture is the mainstay of the Zambian economy.
?Why should we allow foreigners to take over the agriculture sector when we are able to work more than them? In fact, I have been informed by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock that there are various support programmes for farmers,? he said.
Mr Mwamba was speaking in Lusaka after touring stands at the Agriculture and Commercial Show yesterday.
The 87th edition of the Agriculture and Commercial Show is running under the theme ?Business in a changing environment?.
The minister said it is time Zambia became a nation of producers to feed the entire nation and export excess produce.
Mr Mwamba, who described the exhibitions at the show as impressive, said he has been encouraged to venture into agriculture in Kasama.
Mr Mwamba expressed optimism that this year?s show will be a success and toured nine local stands.
The minister arrived at the showgrounds around 09:40 and was met by Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Bob Sichinga and other senior Government officials.
Mr Sichinga said his ministry targets to produce 150,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser for the 2013/2014 farming season.
He said 70,000 tonnes of fertiliser will go towards the Fertiliser Input Support Programme (FISP) and the rest will go to the open market.
And Dr Scott said apart from farmers adapting to climate change and conservation farming, this year?s theme will help business people to diversify in their marketing strategy.
She said she was impressed that both farmers and business people have come up with new ways of doing business.
She pinpointed companies like Zesco, who are working tirelessly to meet the demand for electricity countryside, mitigate load shedding and build more hydro-power stations.
Dr Scott was also impressed with young farmers from rural areas who she said have more information and knowledge on climate change.
She commended NIPA for coming up with degree programmes and building a modern library.
She arrived at the Show Grounds around 09:10 hours and toured eight stands in the company of show society past president Elizabeth Nkumbula.

Global travel warning: US cites al-Qaida threat

(AP) ? The United States issued an extraordinary global travel warning to Americans Friday about the threat of an al-Qaida attack and closed down 21 embassies and consulates across the Muslim world for the weekend.

The alert was the first of its kind since an announcement preceding the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This one comes with the scars still fresh from last year's deadly Sept. 11 attack on a U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, and with the Obama administration and Congress determined to prevent any similar breach of an American Embassy or consulate.

"There is a significant threat stream and we're reacting to it," said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He told ABC News in an interview to be aired Sunday that the threat was "more specific" than previous ones and the "intent is to attack Western, not just U.S. interests."

The State Department warning urged American travelers to take extra precautions overseas, citing potential dangers involved with public transportation systems and other prime sites for tourists and noting that previous terrorist attacks have centered on subway and rail networks as well as airplanes and boats. It suggested travelers sign up for State Department alerts and register with U.S. consulates in the countries they visit.

The statement said that al-Qaida or its allies might target either U.S. government or private American interests. The alert expires on Aug. 31.

The State Department said the potential for terrorism was particularly acute in the Middle East and North Africa, with a possible attack occurring on or coming from the Arabian Peninsula.

U.S. officials pointed specifically to Yemen, the home of al-Qaida's most dangerous offshoot and the network blamed for several notable terrorist plots on the United States, from the foiled Christmas Day 2009 effort to bomb an airliner over Detroit to the explosives-laden parcels intercepted the following year aboard cargo flights.

"Current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August," a department statement said.

The alert was posted a day after the U.S. announced it would shut many diplomatic facilities Sunday. Spokeswoman Marie Harf said the department acted out of an "abundance of caution" and that some missions may stay closed for longer than a day. Sunday is a business day in Muslim countries, and the diplomatic offices affected stretch from Mauritania in northwest Africa to Afghanistan.

"I don't know if I can say there was a specific threat," said Rep. Eliot Engel of New York, the House Foreign Affairs Committee's top Democrat, who was briefed on the State Department's decision. "There is concern over the potentiality of violence."

Although the warning coincided with "Al-Quds Day," the last Friday of the Islamic month of Ramadan when people in Iran and some Arab countries express their solidarity with the Palestinians and their opposition to Israel, U.S. officials played down any connection. They said the threat wasn't directed toward a specific American diplomatic facility.

The concern by American officials over the Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is not new, given the terror branch's gains in territory and reach during Yemen's prolonged Arab Spring-related instability.

The group made significant territorial gains last year, capturing towns and cities in the south amid a power struggle in the capital that ended with the resignation of Yemen's longtime leader, Ali Abdullah Saleh. A U.S.-aided counteroffensive by the government has since pushed the militants back.

Yemen's current president, Abdo Rabby Mansour Hadi, met with U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House on Thursday, where both leaders cited strong counterterrorism cooperation. Earlier this week, Yemen's military reported a U.S. drone strike killed six alleged al-Qaida militants in the group's southern strongholds.

As recently as June, the group's commander, Qasim al-Rimi, released an Arabic-language video urging attacks on U.S. targets and praising the ethnic Chechen brothers accused of carrying out the Boston Marathon bombings. "Making these bombs has become in everyone's ... reach," he said, according to the English subtitles on the video, reposted by private U.S. intelligence firm the IntelCenter.

"The blinking red intelligence appears to be pointing toward an Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula plot," said Seth Jones, counterterror expert at the Rand Corp., referring to the branch of al-Qaida known as AQAP.

Britain also took action Friday in Yemen, announcing it would close its embassy there on Sunday and Monday as a precaution.

Britain, which closely coordinates on intelligence matters with Washington, stopped short of releasing a similar region-wide alert but added that some embassy staff in Yemen had been withdrawn "due to security concerns." British embassies and consulates elsewhere in the Middle East were to remain open.

Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., the House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman, said the embassy threat was linked to al-Qaida and concerned the Middle East and Central Asia.

"In this instance, we can take a step to better protect our personnel and, out of an abundance of caution, we should," Royce said. He declined to say if the National Security Agency's much-debated surveillance program helped reveal the threat.

The New York Times reported Friday night that American officials said the U.S. had intercepted electronic communications among senior operatives of al-Qaida.

Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence panel, also supported the department's decision to go public with its concerns.

"The most important thing we have to do is protect American lives," he said, describing the threat as "not the regular chitchat" picked up from would-be militants on the Internet or elsewhere.

The State Department issued another warning a year ago about potential violence connected to the Sept. 11 anniversary. Dozens of American installations were besieged by protests over reports of an anti-Islam video made by an American resident, and in Benghazi, Libya, the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed when militants assaulted a diplomatic post.

The administration no longer says Benghazi was related to the demonstrations. But the attack continues to be a flashpoint of contention with Republicans in Congress who say Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and others in the government misled the country about the nature of the attack after failing to provide adequate diplomatic protection.

Kerry says hopes Pakistan drone strikes to end soon

By Lesley Wroughton and Maria Golovnina

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told Pakistanis on Thursday that Washington planned to end drone strikes in their country soon - a message aimed at removing a major source of anti-American resentment in the strategically important country.

After meeting Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Kerry said they had agreed to re-establish a "full partnership", hoping to end years of acrimony over the drone strikes and other grievances including the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

In a television interview later, Kerry said of the drone strikes: "I think the program will end as we have eliminated most of the threat and continue to eliminate it."

"I think the president has a very real timeline and we hope it's going to be very, very soon," he told Pakistan Television, when asked whether the U.S. had a timeline for ending drone strikes, aimed at militants in Pakistan.

U.S. drone missiles have targeted areas near the Afghan border including North Waziristan, the main stronghold for various militant groups aligned with al Qaeda and the Taliban, since 2004. Pakistanis have been angered by reports of civilian casualties and what they see as an abuse of their sovereignty.

It is unclear if, in their face-to-face talks, Sharif asked Kerry to halt the drone attacks.

But when asked at a news conference whether Pakistan wanted the U.S. to curtail the strikes, his foreign affairs adviser, Sartaj Aziz, replied: "We are asking them to stop it, not just curtail it."

Besides the drones and the killing of bin Laden in 2011, relations have been strained by Pakistan's support for Taliban insurgents fighting Western troops in Afghanistan as well as a NATO air attack in which 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed.

"I want to emphasize the relationship is not defined simply by the threats we face, it is not only a relationship about combating terrorism, it is about supporting the people of Pakistan, particularly helping at this critical moment for Pakistan's economic revival," Kerry told reporters.

A new government in Pakistan and a new secretary of state in Washington have increased hopes the two sides can settle their grievances - something both hope to gain from, with Pakistan's economy badly needing support and the United States aiming to withdraw the bulk of its troops from Afghanistan next year.

Speaking after talks with Sharif in Islamabad, Kerry - who as a senator sponsored legislation to provide $7 billion in assistance to Pakistan over 5 years - said he had invited Sharif to visit the United States, Pakistan's biggest donor, for talks with President Barack Obama.

"What was important today was that there was a determination ... to move this relationship to the full partnership that it ought to be, and to find the ways to deal with individual issues that have been irritants over the course of the past years," he said.

"And I believe that the Prime Minister is serious about doing that. And I know that President Obama is also."

Note: Proved reserves are measured as of December 31.

U.S. proved crude oil reserve additions in 2011 set a record volumetric increase for the second year in a row, according to newly published estimates in EIA's U.S. Crude Oil and Natural Gas Proved Reserves, 2011. Natural gas proved reserve additions fell short of setting a record, but still ranked as the second largest annual increase since 1977. Crude oil reserves rose 15% (almost 3.8 billion barrels) to the highest level since 1985, and natural gas reserves were up almost 10% (31.2 trillion cubic feet).

Proved oil reserves, which include crude oil and lease condensate, increased to 29.0 billion barrels, marking the third consecutive annual increase and the highest volume of proved reserves since 1985. Proved reserves in tight oil plays accounted for 3.6 billion barrels (13%) of total proved reserves of crude oil and lease condensate in 2011.

Texas recorded the largest increase in proved oil reserves among individual states, largely because of continuing development in the Permian Basin and the Eagle Ford formation in the Western Gulf Basin. North Dakota had the second largest increase, driven by development activity in the Bakken formation in the Williston Basin.

Combined, Texas and Pennsylvania added 73% of the net increase in proved wet natural gas reserves in 2011. Pennsylvania's proved natural gas reserves, which more than doubled in 2010, increased by 12.7 trillion cubic feet in 2011, contributing 41% of the overall gain in proved reserves. Proved reserves in shale gas plays accounted for 131.6 trillion cubic feet (38%) of total proved reserves of wet natural gas in 2011.

Natural gas proved reserves, estimated as wet gas that includes liquids in the natural gas stream, increased by almost 10% in 2011 to 348.8 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), the 13th consecutive annual increase.

With that, I will now turn the call over to our CEO, Ajay Banga. Ajay?

Ajay Banga

Good morning, everybody. We are very pleased to report EPS growth of 23% for the second quarter. Our net revenue growth of 15%, operating expenses grew 5%, and we continued to execute on our global strategy and navigate through what we all know is a somewhat uncertain economic environment.

So, let?s take a look first of the U.S. consumer spending was up last quarter. Retail sales growth was better than expected. Housing indicators continued to show signs of recovery. Our spending pulse data for the second quarter showed a growth in U.S. retail sales ex-auto was 4%, that is over the same quarter of the prior year, and that is up from 2.6% as the same number for the first quarter. So, contributing to the growth was a steady improvement in consumer confidence and some stabilization in the employment levels in the country. Our own U.S. business reflected these improving trends with 6% volume growth, up from last quarter?s 4% growth.

Moving on to Europe, the environment is somewhat similar to what we saw. Over the last several quarters, there are a few upbeat notes there. Economic trends were similar for the UK and for parts of Continental Europe. During the second quarter, consumer confidence increased there. Business sentiment was a little weak in the second quarter there. Although recent PMI studies indicate that business sentiment now may also be turning up. In spite of those mixed economic signals, we are still seeing opportunities to expand our business and take advantage of that secular shift from cash through electronic and that shows up in our solid second quarter volume growth of 14% in Europe.

In the Asia, consumer spending in the second quarter was on the rise. In the majority of markets, consumer confidence levels are doing well across the regions with key markets like Korea and Japan being marked improvements. Business sentiment across the region is mixed and that's kind of due to the lingering concerns about the effects of the sluggish Chinese and European markets may have on the broader Asian export dependent economy. Our business in the region however continues to do well. We had volume growth of 21% in Asia.

Latin America, consumer confidence in both Brazil and Mexico is somewhat challenged for all the reasons you read about and expectation for GPD growth in Mexico have recently been lowered. But we are still growing our volume in Latin America at almost 17% but clearly we are watching the wider economic trend there very carefully. So before we go over to some recent business highlights, I thought I'd spend a minute on the legal and regulatory front and particularly with regard to the U.S. Merchant litigation, the merchant opt-out period ended in late May and as most of you already know about 8000 merchants decided to opt-out of the cash settlement. The represents just marginally over 25% of the total purchase volume over the settlement's time frame.

The defendants as a group have the right to terminate the settlement agreement because the volume threshold of 25% was exceeded, but elected not to do so. We expect most of the larger merchants who opted-out will file separate actions to recover damages and many of them have already started to do so. The final approval hearing is scheduled to begin on September the 12th. We remain confident that the settlement will be approved. We are also pleased that the Canadian Competition Tribunal recently upheld our no surcharge Honour-All-Cards and No-Discrimination rules in Canada.

And in Europe, I know that Javier and Noah were on a call with most of you last Thursday to discuss the EC's proposed legislation.

So I'm going to spend less time on that, but I do want to offer a couple of thoughts that I have in my mind on the topic. We partner with governments around the world in many areas related to electronic payments but there will be times when the interest of some of our stake holders require us to raise concerns of our proposed action, this is one of those times. We support the European Commission?s gold of a secure, efficient, competitive innovative European payments industry. We believe that they have made a good start towards recognizing the importance of a level playing field. It also appears that there is actually potential to further open up and get competition in place for domestic processing.

However we remain concerned that some of the proposed legislation could have unintended consequences of hindering competition, and innovation, and we remain concerned that it could be harmful to consumers and small merchants in Europe. And so in the upcoming debate as this legislation, the proposed legislation winds its way through the process, we are going to engage all participants in the process. We will try and ensure the best possible outcome in the best possible way.

Finally I want to reiterate Javier?s confidence that our model, our business model will adapt as necessary to allow us to compete effectively and continue to provide innovative payment products and services that our customers want to offer, consumers want to use, merchants want to accept and that's where we are focused on.

So moving from there on to some recent business activity. You will get a chance to see a lot of things that are invested in September. So I?m going to focus our progress here around a few key themes and keep in short.

During the quarter we continued to sign new agreements, supporting the expansion of our credit and debit business that's the first theme including the following examples. In Europe, Danske Bank, the largest bank in Denmark will be issuing MasterCard consumer debit, credit, and commercial cards in 10 countries. And together with what we did with Fred (ph) Bank, Nordea as our wins (ph) there, we expect to grow our total market share by 50% in the Nordic and Baltic region over the next five years.

In Korea we have two new debit card wins to help lock in our debit market leadership position. First is the (inaudible) Card the recent spin-off of the card division of one of Korea's largest retail banks and they are now issuing platinum debit cards with us. We also recently signed an agreement with Hana SK that will further increase our dominant share of their debit portfolio. In the U.S., we continued to aggressively pursue all opportunities in the consumer credit and co-brand space as they arise. We?re pretty confident and are showing regular progress as and when they come up and we can announce them.

Moving to cross-border, which as you know is an important part of our business that's the second theme. Let me give you a flavor of some of our new travel and affluent (ph) programs around the world. In the UK our access prepaid business recently launched four new multi-currency cash passport programs, all of which are available online. One example is British Airways launching their Executive Club Cash Passport card, which is capable of having up to seven currencies loaded on the card.

South Africa, (inaudible) bank in South Africa launched the country?s first re-loadable prepaid travel multi-currency card. This allows for four currencies to be loaded on to the card. And one of the largest financial institutions in the Middle East, the Riyad Bank in Saudi Arabia just launched a gold-plated World Elite card for their private banking client, and these benefits include everything from unlimited lounge access at our cross-border rewards program and the like.

So, the third theme, leading the transition to digital payments, we are focused on creating better shopping experiences for the consumer, more value for the merchant. And then I will give you a couple of examples. First, MasterPass Digital Wallet, that rollout has now expanded to four countries. Canada launched the past quarter. The UK is launching as you read in the media as we speak. With the addition of web.com, that?s a provider of internet services for small businesses in the U.S. and Canada, this wallet is now accepted at more than 20,000 merchants globally. In Singapore with the addition of SingTel?s recent launch of their mCASH program, all three telcos in Singapore, SingTel, StarHub, and M1 now have wallets MasterCard as the only open loop payment card option.

Last theme, IPS, or issuer processing platform for debit, ATM, and prepaid. As you know, IPS enables our consumers and our customers rather to decrease their reliance on their legacy systems, increase their ability to drive innovation, get to market quicker reduces some of that cost of complying with some of the increasingly complex regulatory requirements. In the U.S., e-bank (inaudible) and USAA, all recently completed conversions for IPS. Wells Fargo is completing a conversion later this year for a commercial prepaid offering. IPS also part of the access prepaid, which is our prepaid program manager to support global travel programs, such as the Qantas multi-currency card, which I have talked about last quarter.

So, just to give you a headline on this, in the last couple of years, we have increased our IPS customer base from 5 to 16. We are now in 23 countries and 17 languages. We can scale and we will scale and we will expand the platform. So, now let me turn the call over to Martina for a detailed update on our financial results and operational metrics. Martina?

Martina Hund-Mejean

Thanks, Ajay, and good morning everyone. Let me begin on page three of our slide deck, where you can see this quarter the as reported as well as the FX adjusted growth rate by essentially the same.

As Ajay said, we are very pleased with our performance this quarter given the continued slow growth economic environment. Net revenue growth of 15% combines with operating expense growth of 5% supported our net income growth of 19%. And EPS growth of 23% also benefited from our share repurchase programs. Cash flow from operations was $742 million, and we ended the quarter with cash, cash equivalents, and other liquid investments of about $5.1 billion. During the quarter, we repurchased almost 1.1 million shares of Class A common stock at a cost of approximately $580 million. Through July 25, we repurchased almost 300,000 shares at a cost of $174 million, and we now have $1.1 billion remaining under the current Board authorization. You will continue to look to repurchase shares on an opportunistic basis.

So, let me turn to page four, and here you can see the operational metrics for the second quarter. Our worldwide gross dollar volume, or GDV, was up 13% on a local currency basis to just over $1 trillion. U.S. GDV grew 6% with credit volumes growing 3%. And U.S. commercial credit growth was in the low teens similar to last quarter. U.S. consumer credit growth was slightly positive also an improvement from last quarter. Our U.S. debit growth was 9% driven by higher growth across all of our consumer and commercial debit as well as prepaid programs. And outside of the U.S., volume growth was 17% on a local currency basis. This continues to be driven by APMEA with more than 20% growth and solid 14% and 17% growth in Europe and LAC respectively. First quarter volume grew 17% on a local currency basis including more than 20% in LAC and APMEA and growth in the high-teens in Europe.

So turning to page five, process transactions grew over 11% globally. In the U.S. Retail growth of 5% which was lower than last quarter as we anniversary our pin debit processing wins. As you know, we are managing pin debit transactions to optimize our revenue and our transaction level has remained about the same over the past several quarters. Outside the U.S. process transactions grew 20%. We saw increased growth in all regions but particular strength in Brazil, Russia, Australia, Netherlands and South Africa. Globally the number of cards grew 8% to 1.9 billion MasterCard and Maestro-branded cards.

Let me now turn to page six with some insights on our revenue. Within our net revenue growth of 15%, gross revenue grew 12% in-line with volume and transaction drivers as well as some pricing. Rebates and incentives only increased by 2%. As you know the rebates and incentive line can move around on a quarter-to-quarter basis depending on the timing of deals.

Specifically in the second quarter, we had two factors that contributed to this relatively low growth rate. First, some contracts were not yet signed by quarter close and second we had some lumpiness due to the performance of a few contracts. Overall these factors represented about 2.5 percentage points of our total 15% net revenue growth.

Similar to the prior quarter, growth in domestic assessment was again driven by strong growth outside of the U.S. which comes at a lower yield. And the gap between the growth in first quarter volume and revenue continued to be due a higher mix of intra-Europe activity excluding the impact of pricing.

So let's look at the components of total operating expenses which you see on page seven. The increase in G&A expense was primarily driven by the impacts of higher compensation costs as a result of the increase in the number of employees compared to the same last year, to the same time last year to support our growth initiatives.

The slight increase in advertising and marketing expense was mainly due to the impact of new and renewed sponsorships.

Turning to slide eight, let's discuss what we have seen for the third quarter through July 28.

Globally our cross-border volume grew about 15%, so that's just slightly below of what we saw in the second quarter. And this was primarily driven by slower growth outside the U.S. due to the timing of Ramadan.

In the U.S., our processed volume grew 9%, up from our second quarter growth due to improvements in both credit and debit. Process volume growth outside of the U.S. grew 16% that's about equal to what we saw in the second quarter. And in particular our European process volume growth was in the mid-teens very similar to what we saw in the second quarter.

Globally process transaction growth was 14% to up from the 11% that we saw in the second quarter driven by higher growth in the U.S. for both credit and debit. Looking forward let me start with our long term performance objectives which have not changed. We remain confident that our business can deliver an 11% to 14% net revenue CAGR and at least 20% EPS CAGR over the 2013 to 2015 period and these growth rates are on a constant currency basis and they exclude any new acquisitions. We also remain committed to our annual operating margin target of at least 50%. However, assuming that the economic environment remains similar to where it is today, we now expect that net revenue and EPS growth in the early part of this three year period will likely be at the low-end of our stated ranges for net revenue growth and EPS growth and that is slightly better than we previously anticipated.

Now, I would like to share with you a few specific thoughts about 2013. So, given our stronger than expected second quarter net revenue growth and what we see for rebates and incentives for the balance of the year, we now believe that second half net revenue growth will be similar to what we saw in the first half. We continued to anticipate total 2013 operating expenses to grow a bit below the 8% currency adjusted growth rate that we saw in 2012 as we continued to spend on the right things to support our growth initiatives while keeping an eye on more discretionary spending.

We also continue to foresee some operating margin expansion in 2013. The amount of any improvement as you know will depend on both top line growth and the investment opportunities that may surface during the year. And for your modeling purposes, we now think that you could see a full year tax rate of about 31%. With respect to FX, if rates remain the same as they are today, so that is the euro continues to trade at the 133 level and the Brazilian real at the 226 level for the rest of the year. The impact of the euro and the real will essentially offset each other for full year 2013.

So, now let me turn the call back to Barbara to begin the Q&A session. Barbara?

Thanks Martina. We are now ready to begin the Q&A period. In order to get to as many people as possible, we ask that you limit yourself to a single question and then queue back in for additional questions. Operator?

Moto X: Motorola introduces its first smartphone made after the Google acquisition

After months of anticipation, teases, and leaks, Motorola is finally preparing to answer the question: Will X mark the spot?

On Thursday afternoon Motorola officially unveiled the Moto X, the company's first smartphone conceived of, created and sold completely after it was acquired by Google. After a string of duds in the marketplace, Motorola is banking on a few features for its Moto X to help it thrive in the post-Googorola world: voice control, an ultra-fast camera and the strangest color combinations you've ever seen on a smartphone.

Generally, according to Motorola VP of Product Management Lior Ron, the aim of the Moto X is similar to that of the stated purpose of Google Glass: to get out of the way, and to make interaction with your smartphone more human, more natural.

SPEAK UP

The most gee-whiz feature of the Moto X is what Motorola calls "Touchless Control." Also available on Motorola's recent Droid phones for Verizon, this allows X owners to awaken and operate their smartphone without touching it. Say "OK, Google Now" and the screen unlocks, the display powers on and you are able to instruct the smartphone to complete a number of actions, among them: Making a phone call, sending a text message, searching Google (duh), getting navigation directions, changing the music, checking the weather, setting a reminder and essentially anything else Google's Siri competitor, Google Now, can accomplish.

You don't need to be connected to Wi-Fi or the mobile network for Touchless Control to work. And to prevent pranksters from activating the assistant by saying "OK Google Now" in your vicinity, the phone learns your voice so that it only responds to you.

There are some obvious flaws, of course: It would be nice if it can learn one more person's voice (your wife's, for example), so that someone else could borrow your phone or take control if your mouth is otherwise indisposed. And during a meeting with Motorola, the function was accidentally triggered when a Motorola exec said "OK" without the Google Now. In my brief tests with the Moto X, however, I could only get it to power on when I said "OK Google," and none of my colleagues were able to launch my assistant by speaking the magic words.

(Speaking of touchless: The Moto X also features something called "Active Display," which basically pulses your notification on the screen every few seconds when the phone is asleep. This is done so that you don't have to press the sleep button on your phone to view your notifications; you can also swipe up from that screen to peek at the content of a text message or email without unlocking the phone.)

But back to Touchless Control: If anything, the great obstacle for Motorola's voice feature is Google's speech recognition. Though still far better than Apple's, it still occasionally muddles words and occasionally hears speech when it shouldn't. For this to truly be a killer feature, Google will have to continue tweaking its software until it can flawlessly recognize speech.

QUICK DRAW MCGRAW

Like HTC, Apple and Nokia, Motorola is also heavily promoting its camera. The most distinguishing feature of the Moto X is probably the speed with which you can go from locked display to captured photo; Motorola execs said in a meeting with press that the aim was to get that time down to 2 seconds, from pocket to shutter, versus times of 8 to 10 seconds with other, unnamed phones.

To do so, Motorola has simplified the process as much as possible. First, they've created a gesture that automatically wakes the phone up to camera mode. If you quickly twist the phone over once or twice, you activate the camera; pressing anywhere on the screen when the camera is on will take a photo. (The Moto X uses some fancy auto-focus technology to do away with the need to tap to focus; if you miss that function, you can turn it on in the settings.)

The camera screen on the Moto X.

That's a neat gimmick, but I'm not sure how often I'd use it; and for the first few uses, it was kind of tricky to get the gesture just right. More welcome is the totally clean camera interface: All of the settings have been moved off the screen; they can be fetched by swiping in from the left of the screen, so that almost all you're seeing when you're shooting a photo is the scene in front of you. Zooming in and out is also neat: You just run your finger up or down anywhere on the screen to activate the digital zoom, rather than the scroll bar favored by most smartphone cameras. This is much more intuitive, and easier to use, especially with one hand.

SMARTPHONE AS COLORING BOOK

The software is neat, if occasionally uninspiring; it's the hardware where it seems like Motorola could really pick up some customers. Motorola will allow buyers to go to a website and completely customize the look of their Moto X. At Moto Maker, you can choose from 18 different back colors, two front colors and about a dozen colors for the volume buttons and camera lens rim; you can also choose to emboss a signature on the back of the phone (like you can with the iPod) and choose a wallpaper that ships with your phone.

Motorola also announced that, by the end of the year, you will also be able to get a back made of wood. Yes, wood. Real wood. The company claims that this will make it the first wooden smartphone ever.

Motorola promises that, because the smartphone is (you may have heard, thanks to an aggressive PR blitz) built in the United States, you'll have your customized smartphone in your hand 4 days after you order it online.

The 18 colors for the back of the Moto X. Some are very, very dramatic in person. The Moto Maker service will be available, at first, only at AT&T, but Motorola hopes that it will expand to other carriers within a couple months. At launch -- scheduled for the end of August or early September -- the black and white versions of the Moto X will be available at the five major U.S. phone carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and U.S. Cellular). Given the funky color combinations that should be coming to those other carriers soon, you might want to wait a few weeks before you order at any non-AT&T stores.

THE BASICS

Those are the marquee features; here are the basics for you specs-hounds out there. The Moto X sports a 4.7-inch display with a crisp screen (316 pixels per inch). It ships with 2GB RAM and is available in 16GB or 32GB of storage, with no SD slot; it starts at $199 with a two-year contract. It runs Android and will start at Android 4.2.2; it is not exactly vanilla Android and will have to go through the same update process that plagues other Android manufacturers in terms of receiving timely Android upgrades.

Mercifully, however, the Moto X basically does not have a "skin" on top of it, and the bloatware has been kept to a minimum. On my AT&T Moto X, for example, there is only one AT&T app (My AT&T) that comes pre-loaded on the phone.

Other specs: Motorola says its phone will get full-day battery life; the rear camera is 10 megapixel with what Motorola calls "Clear Pixel" technology, to capture more light both in daytime and low-light. The front camera is 2 megapixels; it weighs 130 grams; and the phone itself is just a tad larger than the iPhone 5, despite having a 4.7-inch screen (versus 4.0 inches on the iPhone). Almost everything on the device is curved, most notably the back, with Motorola claims has been contoured to fit in the human hand.

The Moto X should be available either by the end of August or shortly thereafter, on AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and U.S. Cellular. Motorola has not announced a formal release date or price, but says suggested retail value is $199 for a 16GB model with a two-year contract.

Welcome to the Dongle

Mario Queiroz, vice president of product management, holds the new Google Chromecast dongle as it is announced during a Google event at Dogpatch Studio in San Francisco, California, July 24, 2013. Get a Chromecast. It?s cheap. You?ll love it.

Google?s Chromecast doesn?t do much. But what it does do, it does so consistently well, and so cheaply, that it?s quickly became a primary part of my media-watching routine. Chromecast, a little USB-stick-sized device you might call a dongle if your mother didn?t teach you manners, streams Netflix, YouTube, and websites to your TV. (But wait a second, aren?t Netflix and YouTube also websites? Yes, but there?s a technical distinction we?ll get to in a minute.) Also, Chromecast is fast, unbelievably easy to set up, and pretty much foolproof to use. And it?s $35, which makes it one of the best values in tech, ever. Combine all that, and it?s irresistible. In the five days I?ve had it, Chromecast has become my go-to way for streaming shows to my TV.

It?s not that I lacked for ways to stream videos already?my TV, DVD player, and XBox all have Netflix and YouTube apps, and they?re pretty easy to use. But Chromecast is simpler, faster, and more intuitive than any of those. Other methods usually require four or five steps to set up streaming. First, you?ve got to turn on the TV, choose the right input, turn on the ancillary device, load up an app, find a show, and then press play. It takes a minute or two, and if your set-top box is really slow, maybe a lot more.

Chromecast eliminates a couple of those steps, and it makes others much faster. In this way, Chromecast is similar to other small digital set-top boxes, especially the Roku ($98 or $50) and the $96 Apple TV (though there are some important differences I?ll get to below). With Chromecast, you turn on the TV. Then you load up Netflix (or YouTube or Chrome) on any other machine that?s handy?it could be a PC, a phone, or a tablet, or whatever you have lying around. It?s much faster to navigate and type on those devices than on your set-top box, so you?ll find your show much more quickly. Then press play. On many TVs, you won?t even need to change your TV?s input?Chromecast will do that for you. (Depending on how you set up Chromecast?that is, if you plug its power cord into an external AC adapter rather than into your TV?s USB slot?you might not even need to turn on your TV at all; Chromecast might be able to do that for you, too.) So, anyway, once you find your show, press play. Like black magic, your video just shows up on your TV.

Does this sound complicated? It?s not. Once you have it set up, Chromecast becomes a natural extension of all of the devices in your house. When you?re watching something on pretty much any machine, you?ll be able to shuttle it over to your TV instantly without giving it a second thought. That?s a great deal for only $35.

Now, let me briefly mention a subtle but important technical limitation regarding how Chromecast works. The device streams videos in two ways?either directly over the Internet from a service like Netflix, or from the Chrome browser on your own computer. The first of these methods is the better one?because the video is coming directly from Netflix, your phone or PC is acting only as the remote, and you can turn it off after you?ve started watching the video. The downside is that, at the moment, only YouTube, Netflix, and Google Play support this direct streaming method.

Chromecast also lets you stream anything that you have open in a Chrome tab to your TV. Technically, this means you can play any Web video service on Chromecast, even HBO Go, Hulu, or even a Bittorrent-ed video that you drag into Chrome. All you do is play the video on your laptop in Chrome, then press the button to stream to your Chromecast. But this method?streaming from a Chrome tab?is kind of a hack. Because the videos you play this way come directly from your computer to your Chromecast, they require that your machine be on, and they tend to be of lower quality than the ones you stream from a service like Netflix.

I can already hear Apple partisans hissing at me for failing to mention the greater charms of that company?s set-top box, the Apple TV. And they?re right?in some ways, Chromecast isn?t as good as Apple TV. Apple TV plays videos from many more services, including Hulu and HBO Go, than you?ll find on Chromecast. Apple TV also allows for ?mirroring? from Apple devices, meaning you can send anything on your iPad over to your TV. Chromecast, meanwhile, only lets you mirror Chrome tabs?and only from a PC, not from your mobile device. So if you?ve got a bunch of photos in Picasa on your Mac, you won?t be able to stream a slideshow to Chromecast, as you can using Apple TV. But if your photos are in Flickr?i.e., on the Web?you will be able to watch them on Chromecast (as well as Apple TV).

But Apple TV has its disadvantages, too. First, it only works with Apple?s mobile devices. If your household has multiple machines running different operating systems?if you?ve got an Android phone and Apple tablet?then Apple TV may not be right for you. Also, Apple TV is $96. You can almost get three Chromecasts for the price of one Apple TV. If you?ve got several TVs in your house, Chromecast is obviously a better choice.

Plus, some of Chromecast?s limitations are temporary. Google has released an API for the device?a way for developers to get their services to directly stream to the device?and several firms, including Vimeo and Redbox, will reportedly begin adopting it. I suspect that soon, most of the services that work on Apple TV and Xbox will work on Chromecast, too. (One of the really surprising things about Netflix and YouTube?s support for Chromecast was that I didn?t have to update their apps on my phone to get it?the Chromecast button just showed up in the apps on every device. Watch for that to happen with every other video service you use.)

In some ways, though, the most important thing about Chromecast isn?t what it does. It?s what it costs. By setting a profit-free low price on Chromecast, Google is signaling that it?s not looking to make a lot of money on the device. Instead, it?s aiming for ubiquity. And ubiquity, in and of itself, will improve Chromecast. I don?t have any inside info, but if I were to venture a guess, I think Google?s ideal scenario for Chromecast goes something like this: 1) A lot of people buy the device. 2) A lot of media companies start supporting the device. 3) The dongle (sorry!) disappears?given the device?s popularity and low price, TV companies start building the Chromecast protocol into their TVs. In other words, Chromecast becomes the quasi-standard way of streaming, and every TV becomes a Google TV.

Out of these three steps, Apple, Microsoft, and Roku have already achieved the first two. But none of them can get to Step 3, because all of their business models depend on selling devices for a profit. Google?s does not. Google is instead interested in capturing the ecosystem?once every TV is a Google TV, the company will figure out how to make money from that, somehow.

Will that happen? I think there?s a good chance. For now, though, enjoy Google?s largesse. Get a Chromecast. It?s cheap. You?ll love it.

T-Mobile iPhone 5: battery life bad on T-Mobile?

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: www.howardforums.com --- Tuesday, July 30, 2013
Ever since I've been testing T-Mobile on my iPhone 5 (it's been a few months now), I noticed that my battery life has been less than satisfactory. I've gone through 3 different iPhone 5s for various reasons, too. If I switch back to my AT&T SIM, battery life immediately seems to improve. Is this expected? Is T-Mobile's network naturally weird to where it uses more battery? Is the iPhone 5's baseband just not fully optimized for T-Mobile yet? ...

"Slingatron" To Hurl Payloads Into Orbit

[unable to retrieve full-text content]cylonlover writes "People have been shooting things into space since the 1940s, but in every case this has involved using rockets. This works, but it's incredibly expensive with the cheapest launch costs hovering around $2,000 per pound. This is in part because almost every bit of the rocket is either destroyed or rendered unusable once it has put the payload into orbit. Reusable launch vehicles like the SpaceX Grasshopper offer one way to bring costs down, but another approach is to dump the rockets altogether and hurl payloads into orbit. That's what HyperV Technologies Corp. of Chantilly, Virginia is hoping to achieve with a 'mechanical hypervelocity mass accelerator' called the slingatron."

Egypt: PM has right to give military arrest powers

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's interim president has given the prime minister the power to grant the military the right to arrest civilians after a weekend of violence between supporters of the country's deposed leader and security forces.

Government officials say the decision could be a prelude to a major crackdown on Mohammed Morsi's supporters or militants who have stepped up attacks against security forces in the Sinai Peninsula.

Adly Mansour's decree was published in the government's official gazette Sunday.

The death toll from clashes between Morsi supporters and security forces has risen to 72. Protesters calling for his reinstatement have vowed to continue a massive sit-in.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
