Booker T?.s Harris selected as coach of the year

The Miami Herald

In his second season back at Booker T. Washington, football coach Tim ?Ice? Harris guided the Tornadoes to a state championship and a spot among the nation?s best teams.

On Monday, Harris was acknowledged for his efforts when he was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Association?s Overall Coach of the Year.

Harris joins former Miami Northwestern coach Billy Rolle as the only Miami-Dade coaches to earn the annual award for the top coach in the state. Harris is the third winner from South Florida (Wally Dunne of Coral Springs ? 1992).

Fort Lauderdale University School?s Roger Harriott, who led his team to the Class 3A championship, and Dade Christian?s Mike Sonneborn, who led his team to a Class 2A state runner-up finish, each were among the finalists for the award.

?It?s an awesome award and I?d like to thank the [ association] for choosing me,? Harris said. ?It says everything about the hard work that our coaches and players do at this school. Our ultimate goal every year is to develop these student-athletes in the program and I?m so proud of our kids and I just want to give all of the credit to our coaches and the whole community of Overtown for supporting us.?

Harris led Booker T. to a 13-1 record this season and its second state title. The Tornadoes finished ranked 13th nationally by MaxPreps, and also won a state title in 2007 during Harris? first stint as their coach.

This season, Booker T. crushed Jacksonville Bolles, 35-7, in a rematch of last year?s Class 4A championship, handing the Bulldogs (winners of a state-best 11 titles) their most lopsided loss in a state final.

Harris has compiled an 84-10 record during his seven overall seasons at Booker T., and was named the USA Today National Coach of the Year in 2007.

Chaney steps down

Florida City Barrington Christian announced that football coach Don Chaney has stepped down after four years. Chaney led the Falcons to a district championship in 2010. Prior to his stint at Barrington, Chaney coached at Bay Point, where he led that school to the playoffs three times, including a state semifinal in 2005.
