A Florida resident's answering machine captured a call from a volunteer with the Republican Party of Clay County who was reaching out to potential voters with several important lies about the upcoming presidential election.

From the audio:

"Y'all sound like y'all are senior citizens, right? Yeah. You don't want Obama. You really don' want Obama. Because he'll get rid of your Medicare. You might as well say goodbye to it."

"I don't know if you've done any research on Obama or not, but he is a Muslim... if he had his way, we'd be a socialistic country."

"Pay attention to Fox News."

The head of the Clay County GOP told the St. Augustine Record that the woman was "off-script completely."

We have everything scripted,? Dougher said. ?Those are clearly not the views of the Republican Party of Clay County or the Mitt Romney campaign.?

Saying the party has ?zero tolerance? for voter fraud, the GOP also filed complaints against the company with the Florida Secretary of State?s office. The company, run by long-time GOP operative Nathan Sproul, says a single employee was responsible for the forged signatures, though the problem, by Friday, had spread to 10 counties.

"This is an issue we take extremely seriously," RNC spokesman Sean Spicer told CBS News. "When allegations were brought to our attention we severed all ties to the firm."

While reasonable, those explanations could have trouble finding traction among the US electorate, which has watched battles erupt in mostly swing states from Florida to Ohio over control of voter rolls, and heated debates about potential disenfranchisement of key Democratic constituencies, poorer, minority, and elderly voters.

The allegations are particularly poignant in Florida, which decided the presidential race in 2000 after a massive recount was halted by the US Supreme Court in a way that gave the election to the GOP, and where the current Republican state administration has fought with the US Department of Justice over an effort to weed out illegal immigrants from the state?s voter rolls.

Even more to the point of third-party voter registration contractors, the League of Women Voters sued Florida earlier this month after it instituted a new 48-hour deadline for turning in registration forms. The state relented, reinstating a 10-day deadline.

What?s more, the fraudulent registration findings have echoes of the 2008 controversies over the now-disbanded ACORN community activism group, which was accused by Republicans in 2008 of falsifying forms.

Brad Friedman, who runs the electoral watchdog Brad Blog, helped break the story, tying it to other emerging GOP registration controversies in California and Colorado. Other states where Sproul?s firm had been hired to gather registrations have not reported any problems.

?A massive GOP voter registration scheme, which appears to involve the upper-echelons of the national party, [has begun] to emerge,? Mr. Friedman writes.

Is Getting Married Easier Than Going to Work? | Psychology Today

A student once asked me if I ever wanted ?to get married, stay home, and take it easy instead of go to work."

I laughed for five minutes. She was laughing with me?despite having absoutely no idea what was funny about her question?until I explained, sputtering, that "being married and staying home" was much, much harder than going to work. "If you want to have a good marriage and a stable home, it's never easy," I told her, from the heart, as I poured us coffee. "Having a solid work life will probably make your relationships at home even better?but seeing married life as an "escape route" from personal responsibility is like seeing a three-ring-circus and thinking it'd be a great place to take a nap.

Yes, Dr. Freud, my perspective most certainly goes back to my own mother.

My mom did not learn to write a check until she was in her late 30s. I remember being with her at a local store when the pharmacist behind the counter explained that he would accept a check from her written on my father?s account; I don?t think she?d even known writing a check was a possibility.

Like many other women of her generation, she was given a certain amount of cash every week as a household allowance and it was assumed that all expenses would be paid from that small, small fund.

Anything ?extra? had to be asked for specially. I remember eavesdropping guiltily when the ?extra? item was something I wanted: a new doll, a new dress, or money for the movies. My mother would do my pleading for me when I was a kid, and she and I waited, like members of some guerrilla force, to ambush my father when he was ?in a good mood.?

My mother would instruct me to help prepare his favorite meal and be cheerful until he was sufficiently relaxed.

Then we pounced, giving all the good reasons for this unplanned expenditure.

Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn?t: I grieved for months after being denied a pair of white go-go boots in fourth grade, which had seemed crucial to my emotional well-being. I won?t say that I felt like Scarlett O?Hara lifting her fist to the sky and swearing, ?With God as my witness?I shall never be hungry again!? but I promised myself that when I grew up, I wouldn?t have to play tricks to get them to buy me what I wanted.

My father worked hard?12 hours a day, six days a week, sewing bedspreads and curtains with his brothers at the family shop?and money was always more than tight. It had a stranglehold on us.

Neither of my parents, however, thought my mother should work. She was conflicted in the lessons she taught me, her youngest child and only daughter. I heard that I, too, should be a ?feminine? woman who wasn?t out there scrambling in the rat race, tough and wise-cracking with the men. But I also knew that she wished there had been a way for her talents and intelligence to be recognized, and for her to have more economic independence than her life allowed her.

But since she?d left school in Quebec in the eighth grade and English was her second language, it wasn?t as if she would be able to get an interesting job, or one that used her intelligence and her talents. Cleaning other people?s houses wasn?t going to be any more fun than cleaning our own.

I was scared by my mother?s life. I never wanted to have to ask anybody to foot the bill for my rent, my food, my clothes, or my education. I put myself through college and graduate school, got scholarships but still racked up huge loans which I paid off only after I started writing?and selling?books. I wrote "trade" books for a popular audience as I did academic work that would permit me to be awarded tenure as a professor.?

I worked, it worked, and I've kept on working.?

Yes, I embrace and respect work for the psychological and emotional securities it provides; at times, these can overshadow the very paycheck. And I worry about women who've convinced themselves that, by marrying for money, they?re not going to be "working" for a living. It can be more of a burden to please a partner with whom you live than satisfy a boss for whom you work.?

There's nothing about "taking it easy" to make life more interesting, more fun, or more challenging?and if we don't want to be fascinated, thrilled, or inspired every day, then it's not worth the bother.

Life can be great. It really is like the circus: it's a place to be delighted but not a place where you'll relax?which means that, if you're doing it right, it's rarely easy.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Cats have been itching. Dogs have been itching. So much so, that maybe you have been more inclined to itch! It has been one rough season for fleas.

"We didn't have a real hard winter and it allowed some of these fleas to perpetuate themselves. And now during the summer, we've had a big flea problem, generally worse than previous years," said Dr. Louis Budik of the Transit valley Animal Hospital in Clarence.

Finding these buggers starts with a close inspection and often.

Dr. Budik recommends "at least probably a couple times a week, they should go through the fur of their pet and just part the fur of their pet and just part the fur and you can see the fleas running around."

You've probably heard it before, but keeping your pet flea-free starts with prevention.

"There's certainly several flea products available," he said. "They should bring their pet into their veterinarian who can examine the pet for other problems associated with the fleas."

Yes, along with bitting, fleas can cause tape worms and other skin diseases on pets. Yuck! And it's not always a given that itching means fleas.

"Goldenrod, ragweed, there's many allergens that are in the the environment this year and they cause dogs to itch," Dr. Budik note.d

The itching can be so bad that it causes a more serious problem, called "hot spot."

"I compare it to scratching a mosquito bite," said Dr. Budik. "Sometimes the more you scratch it, the more it itches, so you keep scratching it and then it causes trauma to the skin. The skin becomes infected and it's very painful."

The worst part of this, fleas may not just hang out on your pet.

"Some of these fleas will actually go onto humans and start biting the children or adult members of the household causing a reaction on their skin. They wont make a living off you, but they can cause a problem," Dr. Budik explained.

Markets fretful over global economy, euro crisis

LONDON (AP) ? Growing concerns over the global economy combined with renewed worries over Europe's debt problems to send stocks around the world sharply lower Wednesday.

A day after U.S. stocks suffered their biggest retreat in three months in the wake of comments from a leading official at the Federal Reserve, investors in Europe and Asia are jittery. The euro is down further below $1.30 while oil prices edged back toward $90 a barrel, further indications of rising investor unease.

In Europe, Spain's IBEX index led the list of fallers, trading 2.3 percent lower at 7,983. Germany's DAX was 1.4 percent lower at 7,322 while the CAC-40 in France fell 1.9 percent at 3,447. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was down 1 percent at 5,803.

The catalyst to the current bout of nervousness was a warning from the Fed's Charles Plosser that the central bank's efforts to support the world's biggest economy would likely fall short of its goals.

Markets have been enjoying a fairly buoyant period ever since the Fed joined other central banks in turning on the stimulus taps in the hope of helping global growth.

Investors have also been optimistic that Europe has finally got a grip on its debt crisis after the European Central Bank unveiled a new bond-buying program designed to keep a lid on the borrowing rates of countries like Spain and Italy and prevent a breakup of the 17-country eurozone.

Though conditions are certainly better than they were a few weeks ago, Europe's debt crisis has not gone away. Violent clashes in Madrid Tuesday over the government's anti-austerity drive will be followed Wednesday with a general strike in Greece, the euro country with the most acute economic problems.

"The prospect that Spain might prove as truculent as Athens on the subject of reforms is a particularly uncomfortable one, since it risks making the Greek situation look like a mere sideshow," said Chris Beauchamp, market analyst at IG Index. "Oh, and the Greeks are on strike again, just to underline this point."

Wall Street was poised for a modest recovery later, with both the Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures up 0.1 percent.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average closed down 2 percent at 8,906.70 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 0.8 percent to end at 20,527.73. South Korea's Kospi shed 0.6 percent to 1,980.44. China's Shanghai Composite Index shed 0.6 percent to 2,004.17.

The tensions weren't just evident in stock markets ? the euro was down 0.2 percent at $1.2879. Only last week, it was trading at multi-month highs around $1.32.

Meanwhile, the benchmark New York oil contract was 63 cents lower at $90.74 a barrel.

With his latest movie Looper opening next week, Joseph Gordon-Levitt dropped by the?Rolling Stone?offices for the first time since 2010 for an Off the Cuff session with Peter Travers about the time-travel thriller he stars in with Bruce Willis. "Looper was the first time anyone did write me a part, and it was a real honor," Gordon-Levitt says in an interview focused on the actor's busy schedule: he also had parts this year in The Dark Knight Rises and Premium Rush, he stars alongside Daniel Day-Lewis in the forthcoming Steven Spielberg movie Lincoln, and he's hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend. "I consider myself lucky that I get to spend a lot of time doing something that I love," Gordon-Levitt says.

NHL, union to resume labor talks Friday

TORONTO (AP) ? The NHL and its players' union plan to resume bargaining Friday for the first time since the league's lockout started, but the talks are to focus on non-core economic issues.

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly and NHL Players' Association special counsel Steve Fehr met Tuesday in Toronto and scheduled the session. The session will be in New York.

These will be the first formal negotiations since Sept. 12, when the players and owners exchanged proposals.

The lockout started Sept. 16, the day training camps were to start opening. This is the third lockout since Gary Bettman became commissioner in 1993. The last lockout wiped out the 2004-05 season and ended when players accepted a salary cap.

With the sides far apart on money, they have decided to talk about non-central issues that also are necessary for an agreement. Fehr said the topics will include issues such as the pension plan, the medical plan, schedule rules, drug testing and the grievance procedure.

Top officials from the NHL and NHLPA met Monday to review last season's economics and complete escrow payments due players. The labor contract was not discussed.

"Obviously, we've got to talk before you can get a deal, so I think it's important to get the talks going again," Daly said Monday. "But you also have to have something to say. I think it's fair to say we feel like we need to hear from the players' association in a meaningful way because I don't think that they've really moved off their initial proposal, which was made more than a month ago now."

This is the NHL's fourth work stoppage in the last 20 years. Since this lockout started a handful of players have expressed concern that it could last the entire season. Detroit Red Wings forward Danny Cleary said Monday he was "just trying to be realistic."

It took three months for the NHL and NHLPA to resume bargaining after the lockout began in 2004.

The NHL has $3.3 billion in annual revenue. The league wants to reduce the players' share of hockey related revenue from 57 percent to a range between 49 percent and 47 percent, up from 43 percent in its original proposal. Players think management's alleged financial problems could be addressed by re-examining the teams' revenue-sharing formula.

'Parade of crusaders' joins fight against brain cancer

Hundreds of people gathered outside the Seattle Center Saturday morning to take part in the Seattle Brain Cancer Walk. The annual event not only raises money for research but also helps bring patients and families together for one cause - a cure.

Carrying big signs and wearing colorful shirts declaring the name of a loved one at the cancer walk is like a parade of crusaders - each one battling to help find a cure while showing support for others dealing with the difficult disease.

"Nov. 4 was the day we first got the news that dad had a brain tumor," said Maria Barrett.

Barrett was just one of 30 family members and friends walking as a part of the "Warriors 4 Dad" team in support of her dad, Ed Elston. In honor of Elston?s alma mater ? Oregon State - the team decided to sport orange and black for the event. And despite his family?s best efforts to make things easier for Elston during the walk, Barrett says her dad was determined to take as many steps as he could on his own.

"We got the wheelchair just for this weekend, and he wasn't too excited about that idea," she said. "We're so proud of him. We're so, so proud of him. This has been something none of us will ever forget."

For those walking in honor of someone no longer here, many said it was that person's strength which continued to move them, including a group of 40 walking for KOMO 4 News Anchor Kathi Goertzen.

"In the springtime, Mom actually rounded us up and said - 'Hey guys, I really want to do the Brain Cancer Walk' - and we said - 'Mom, you don't have brain cancer, you have a benign tumor'," said Alexa Jarvis, Kathi's daughter.

But that didn?t matter; Alexa says her mom wanted to come to the walk anyway, simply to show support.

"It's great to have someone come up and tell me that Kathi helped them get through," said Rick Jewett, Kathi's husband.

Kathi's family says supporting others, without always knowing she was doing it, was and is the spirit of Kathi.

"It's overwhelming for me," said Elston.

Fighting brain cancer - something with no known cure - takes research and hope, and Elston says he plans to be a part of both.

Currently, there are more than 120 different types of brain tumors. All of the money raised from the walk goes toward patient care, advocacy and research happening in the Pacific Northwest.

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) ? To speak out against how sexual assault is viewed in today?s America, more than 170 people took to the streets today in Richmond?s first every ?Slut Walk.?? Their creed: ?Abolish the Blame: Bringing Awareness to Sexual Assault and Victim Blaming.?

Speaking through a loud speaker in front of dozens at Byrd Park, Sarah Boggs shared her story for the first time.

?I was raped by two boys in one night,? says Boggs to the crowd.? ?Hearing other people?s stories, telling them mine, it really helped a lot. ?It made me so much more comfortable telling my story.?

Saturday afternoon was Richmond?s first ever ?Slut Walk.?? After a march through the Fan District, survivors and supporters came together to talk about the main problem they see with how society views sexual assaults.

?The blame comes back on the victim, it should have nothing to do with what the victim is wearing, how old the victim is, what race the victim is,? says Kate Rush-Cook, who was a victim of sexual assault.

Organizers say the victim of sexual assault is often blamed for the attack because of the way the person dresses or acts.? It is a social stigma they want to change.

Jennifer Sublett, an assistant Commonwealth?s Attorney in Richmond, spoke at Saturday?s event.? She says sexual assault cases are the most difficult to prosecute.

?It?s always one person?s word against the other,? says Sublett.? ?It?s not about sexuality; it?s about vulnerability.?

Those in attendance brought signs to bring attention to the false idea that the way someone dresses makes them a target for sexual predators.

?Wearing a certain type of clothing isn?t going to stop it.? It isn?t going to stop a person,? says Dominique Lee, who is also a victim of sexual assault.

?I?ve heard people say that she?s going to be raped seeing a girl walk by.? People have to realize that that?s not okay,? says Boggs.

So to start changing this stigma, survivors stood by each other and shared their stories of pain as a sign of what they want to change.

?It?s not okay to blame the victim,? says Rush-Cook.

Although this was the first ?Slut Walk? in Richmond, it won?t be the last.? Organizers say they will continue to share their message by doing another Slut Walk next year.
